The Secret To A Happy Life.

Chief Genius Albert Einstein said, “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.”

Why Albert, why?

Because people will let you down; sometimes because they just do, & other times because we have high expectations of people, including friends & family.

As for “things”, well…the novelty eventually wears off or the thing becomes obselete in a matter of minutes, (sometimes seconds if it’s an Apple product!).

Goals will motivate you, it will take you to new levels all the time as you try to achieve your goals. Will we always achieve the goals we set? Nope. And it’s ok if we don’t…..because by setting goals, we will find that at the end we may not be where we aimed to be, but by geez…we are not where we used to be when we set the goal.

I’ve read that when there is no vision, people perish. Where there is vision…my goodness…people FLOURISH.

The Simple Secret To Goals.

If you are still having trouble working out your goals or just can’t be bothered because you think it’s too overwhelming, here’s an idea. It’s something I read by speaker & author Michael Hyatt. You can read his blog here.

“If you could fast forward to the end of 2012, how will your life be different? What do you need to do to make it happen?” – Michael Hyatt

So the idea is, imagine fast forwarding to the end of this new year, where do you want to see yourself financially, relationally, emotionally, physically (health), career, where you live, your kids/family, etc. If you had it your way, where do you want to see yourself in all these areas of life?

The answer to this question become the goals for every part of your life. These are the sub-goals.

The other question I need to ask is, what one thing needs to happen this new year that will change your life and make it the best year you’ve ever lived through? This is your main goal. Your one thing.

Now that you have your goals, write them down & create an action plan: how do I achieve these goals?

C’mon. You can do this. Get started now. It’s already almost Christmas again….

You Better Run.

Just like survival, success in anything is intentional. From health, to relationships, to attitudes, to money.

I dont believe in luck, but as a point of interest, do you know what the dictionary definition of luck is?

Luck: noun: a ‘force’ that makes things happen.

Complacency, fear, and mediocrity is life-threatening.

So in twentyTwelve plan to run. Use force to make it happen.

Time Out.

“Earlier today I posted a tweet saying, “A little time out ensures a long time in.” This really seemed to resonate strongly with people.

In an age where we are all running a million miles an hour, juggling so many different hats, trying to come in on time and under budget with all our activities, we can tend to feel overwhelmed, inadequate, exhausted, and just plain old tired.

I think before we get to the overload stage, we need to just take regular little bits of time out. These can include watching the sunset, walking along the beach, going on a shopping trip, joining a friend for lunch, watching a fun movie, celebrating a holiday, or whatever it is that replenishes you. When you do this, you will find your physical, spiritual, and emotional batteries charged, and you will last for a long time.

Most people do not give up over a single incident, but rather because they have not recharged themselves regularly over a long period of time. When a crisis, challenge, or stressful situation arises, they quit because there is nothing left with which they can overcome; they are depleted. Therefore, it is wise to take little breaks often in order to endure for a long time.

God calls us to run our race AND finish our course. In order to finish, you must stay in the race, to stay in the race you must keep going, and to keep going you must take some time out.”

Something About Mary

Mary had $200 in the middle of the Depression. With the $200, & with everybody she knew and didn’t know telling her she would fail, Mary leased a gas station that had gone broke twice before her, both times run by men…since it was a “man’s business” after all.

From this small platform, she built a company called Hudson Oil. Today Hudson Oil is the biggest independent distributor of gas and oil in the United States.

Let’s review Mary’s steps to astounding success:

1. Mary had guts. A female in a male’s business? The last $200 she had in the middle of the Great Depression used to lease a gas station? C’mon!

2. Mary took a chance & disregarded the advice she received. I don’t think Mary was stupid or careless & simply ignored wise counsel, for wise counsel is a must before taking action. But I think Mary had already ran the numbers in her head – took a calculated risk & listened to her gut (aka: heart)….or women’s intuition mixed with a large measure of faith had something to do with it….

3. Mary used what was in her hand and stepped out onto a small platform – a local gas station. From that small platform she continued to build until that small platform became a large platform. Everything takes time. But first you must begin. What is in your hand? A gift. A talent. A burning desire. A dream?

4. Mary wasn’t happy to stay small in her comfort zone, in the one, local gas station. She probably could have lived comfortably – normally – had she drove to work everyday into that local gas station, drove home again, went to bed and did the same the day after. No. She projected forward and could see what could be if she stepped out AGAIN in faith. She didn’t want to be normal. I don’t think it was greed either. I think she took on the challenge of the dream.

If you’ve read the steps above, did you notice that by step 4, Mary had to rinse and repeat steps 1-3? To live at higher levels, steps 1-3 will always be a requirement before you get to step 4.

Don’t get too comfortable, in fact – you must learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

How to Reach Your Destiny in One Easy Step

Despite all of the factors that affect our lives—like the kind of parents we have, the schools we attended, the part of the country we grew up in—none has as much potential power for affecting our futures as our ability to dream.

Dreams are a projection of the kind of life you want to lead. Dreams can drive you. Dreams can make you skip over obstacles.

When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creative force that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid. Your dreams must be stronger than the obstacles in their way.

You’ve got to be a dreamer.

You’ve got to envision the future.

You’ve got to see the finish line while you’re running the race.

You’ve got to hear the cheers when you’re in the middle of a monster project.

You’ve got to be willing to put yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable.

Because that’s how you realize your dreams.

Try This For Exercise!

I’m not a big exerciser other than walking 50mins most mornings with my wife, and another 30mins in the evening in the warmer months. I try to cycle when I can, but lately that has been a non-event.

But there is another form of exercise I read about recently which I would like to promote.

It’s called “The Push Pull Grab.”

Yep. Here’s how it’s done:

1. PUSH away distractions

2. PULL toward your goals

3. GRAB your opportunities

Repeat daily.

Enjoy. The results will astound you…

Long Term vs Short Term

A Harvard study found that the more long-term your thinking is, the more successful you will be in life. And the more short-term your thinking is, the less successful you will be.

Unsuccessful people tend to only think about the here and now, what feels good now, what’s nice to have now. They don’t think past their nose.

If you think long term, you will have greater success, because you are willing to put up with short term pain to achieve long term benefits.

Put in the hard yards now. Fake it til you make it. Success will eventually meet up with you.

We Know It All

Motivator Tony Robbins says, “You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know..”

We know to get out of debt, yet we’ll use the credit card or get a loan yet again.

We know we shouldn’t eat that double choc ice cream, yet we tell ourselves “just one spoon full..”.

We know we should be studying for that exam now, yet we’ll go to the movies instead.

We know we should read rather than watch this reality cooking show on TV, yet “but it’s the finals”.

We know we should be spending time with the kids, yet another chore to do instead.

We know what to do most of the time. It’s that niggling inside you that prompts you to do something, but we choose to ignore it.

Can you imagine how good our lives would be if we listened to ourselves? Let’s make an effort to do that, even just as a test for the next 30 days…..just for fun…
