The Simple Secret To Goals.

If you are still having trouble working out your goals or just can’t be bothered because you think it’s too overwhelming, here’s an idea. It’s something I read by speaker & author Michael Hyatt. You can read his blog here.

“If you could fast forward to the end of 2012, how will your life be different? What do you need to do to make it happen?” – Michael Hyatt

So the idea is, imagine fast forwarding to the end of this new year, where do you want to see yourself financially, relationally, emotionally, physically (health), career, where you live, your kids/family, etc. If you had it your way, where do you want to see yourself in all these areas of life?

The answer to this question become the goals for every part of your life. These are the sub-goals.

The other question I need to ask is, what one thing needs to happen this new year that will change your life and make it the best year you’ve ever lived through? This is your main goal. Your one thing.

Now that you have your goals, write them down & create an action plan: how do I achieve these goals?

C’mon. You can do this. Get started now. It’s already almost Christmas again….

Set The Sails

A sailing boat, no matter how hi-tech, sophisticated, or innovative in its design, will go absolutely nowhere unless its sails have been set so the wind can push it forward.

You will die wondering unless you step out in faith and try. Yes, it is safer & risk-less to dock the boat, however, boats are not designed to be docked….are they…?

How to Reach Your Destiny in One Easy Step

Despite all of the factors that affect our lives—like the kind of parents we have, the schools we attended, the part of the country we grew up in—none has as much potential power for affecting our futures as our ability to dream.

Dreams are a projection of the kind of life you want to lead. Dreams can drive you. Dreams can make you skip over obstacles.

When you allow your dreams to pull you, they unleash a creative force that can overpower any obstacle in your path. To unleash this power, though, your dreams must be well defined. A fuzzy future has little pulling power. Well-defined dreams are not fuzzy. Wishes are fuzzy. To really achieve your dreams, to really have your future plans pull you forward, your dreams must be vivid. Your dreams must be stronger than the obstacles in their way.

You’ve got to be a dreamer.

You’ve got to envision the future.

You’ve got to see the finish line while you’re running the race.

You’ve got to hear the cheers when you’re in the middle of a monster project.

We Know It All

Motivator Tony Robbins says, “You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know..”

We know to get out of debt, yet we’ll use the credit card or get a loan yet again.

We know we shouldn’t eat that double choc ice cream, yet we tell ourselves “just one spoon full..”.

We know we should be studying for that exam now, yet we’ll go to the movies instead.

We know we should read rather than watch this reality cooking show on TV, yet “but it’s the finals”.

We know we should be spending time with the kids, yet another chore to do instead.

We know what to do most of the time. It’s that niggling inside you that prompts you to do something, but we choose to ignore it.

Can you imagine how good our lives would be if we listened to ourselves? Let’s make an effort to do that, even just as a test for the next 30 days…..just for fun…

What’s Your Motivator?

I have a mate who loves to participate in charity cycling events. It’s the races that go for days & days.

Craig has a day job, but he just has a passion for cycling for a cause.

In preparation, he would train. He would go some crazy hours on the bike each day to build fitness, to get used to the pain, & also to make sure his bum & muscles know what it’s about to be in for!

Of course, come the event, he succeeds & he accomplishes what he set out to do.

But I noticed, when there is no upcoming race, Craig won’t be as disciplined to train as hard, as constant, or as consistent.

I own a road-bike too. But I’m either too busy, or it’s too cold, or too hot, or the sun isn’t at the right angle, or the stars didn’t align properly the night before…whatever…I’ll come up with something, even though I actually enjoy cycling.

I’ll bet you though, if I had a 1,000km ride starting in 3months, or if I had a race coming up in the next few weeks, I would find every possible opportunity to get on my bike & train…& train…& train…rain, hail, or shine, come hell or highwater, no matter how busy I was.

Why? Because I have a set goal. I have a deadline to meet & I have a commitment to turn up.

Funny how goals will change your priorities.

A Story About The Amigo

An American businessman took a vacation to a small coastal Mexican village on doctor’s orders. Unable to sleep after an urgent phone call from the office the first morning, he walked out to the pier to clear his head. A small boat with just one fisherman had docked, and inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish.

“How long did it take you to catch them?” the American asked.

“Only a little while,” the Mexican replied in surprisingly good English.

“Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?” the American asked.

“I have enough to support my family an give a few to friends,” the Mexican said as he unloaded them into a basket.

“…But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“The Mexican looked up and smiled, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a siesta with my wife, Julia, and stroll into the village each evening, where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.”

The American laughed and stood tall. “Sir, I’m a Harvard MBA and can help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. In no time, you could buy several boats with the increase haul. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats.”

He continued, “Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the consumers, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then to LA, & eventually New York, where you could run your expanding enterprise with proper management.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But how long will all this take?”

To which the American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You would make millions!”

“Millions? Then what?”

“Then you would retire and move to a small coastal fishing village, where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, and stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos…”

In my last post I talked about thinking big. Thinking big is ok, but I think priority must be the order of the day. Why do we do what we do? What’s the goal? Is there a point to it? Why are you doing what you are doing right now? Is there a purpose to it? What is that purpose?

It’s all got to make sense.

Make the Main Thing the Main Thing

Henry Ford once said, referring to his Model-T, the best selling car of all time;

“The customer can have any colour he wants, so long as it’s black”.

Although this quote is widely used in a business sense, ie not giving the customer too many options so they can make an easy decision; it can also be applied to everyday life.

We have so many options in every aspect of life these days, but we must remember for whatever it is we are trying to accomplish, to make the main thing the main thing and not be distracted.

If you are trying to fix a marriage, work on the marriage, romance and date your spouse. Watching tv, playing the PS3, staying late at the office, or even going to the pub with the boys won’t help.

If your money is acting funny, fix it. Get on a budget. Get out of debt. Stop impulse spending. Sell some stuff. Get on a money plan. No more credit cards.

If you are sick, maybe the drug you are taking isn’t helping, it’s probably making you worse. Maybe it’s taking longer than expected to get better. Don’t accept it. You can’t deny the symptoms but you can defy the outcome. Find the root of the cause. Your body is made to heal itself, if it’s not, something is amiss. Is it your diet? Is it your lifestyle? Is it stress levels? FIND OUT. Change.

You get the point, right?

Make it a mission to find the solution to your problem, to fix what’s broken. Yes it’s hard, but I guess in the end it’s what you prioritize.

“How to Invent a Light Bulb”

Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. By accident? No.

Edison had 1,093 patents during his lifetime.

Edison was one focused dude when it came to inventions. He would attempt to purposely put his brain into a state of where theta brain waves would work for him.

Theta Brain Waves.

What are “theta brain waves”? These are slow travelling brain waves. Someone who daydreams is often in a theta brain wave state.

Any repetitive action – whether motorway driving, running, walking, or even taking a shower where the water pulses on your skin – can put you in a theta state, which is why good ideas often pop up during these activities.

It is a state in which tasks become so automatic that you can mentally disengage from them.

Theta thoughts are usually free-flowing, representing a positive mental state, where anything is possible.

Bearings.

Back to Edison. Edison would doze off in a chair with his arms and hands draped over the armrests. In each hand he held a ball bearing. Below each hand on the floor were two pie plates. When he drifted into the state between waking and sleeping, his hands would naturally relax and the ball bearings would drop onto the plates. Of course this would awaken Edison and he would immediately take notes on any ideas that had come to him.

Staying Deaf.

What most people don’t know, is that Edison was almost totally deaf from his youth onwards. But when offered the chance to have his hearing restored, the great inventor refused!

The reason? He was afraid he would have difficulty relearning how to channel his thinking in an ever more noisy world.”

In other words, he didn’t want any distractions, any interference. He wanted to remain focused.

Keeping Focus.

It is with that tenacity, that level of focus, will we ever achieve any goal we set ourselves. Whether it be a marriage issue, a money issue, a physical issue, any issue, anything is possible if you keep your focus on the desired end result….and on purpose.

“Is Your Backyard Clean?”

I love how my backyard is always clean. I love how my swimming pool is always clean. I love how my grass is always green and neat.

Cause: I sweep my backyard and clean my pool each morning. I water the lawn most nights. I mow the lawn weekly.

To get where you want to be, to have what you want ie. your goals and dreams, it will take decisions and effort to ensure it happens.

Consistency & discipline are necessary ingredients.

Nothing happens on its own. Work it and keep working it.
